Maori music is at a cross
roads, we have our own TV station and we also have iwi stations scattered across
NZ but we still can't break into the main stream music scene on a regular basis.
MMIC have a few ideas
that will help our music move forward, so stayed tuned to this website and we
will have regular updates as they come to hand.

Maori Music Awards
Waiata Maori Awards 07
Wednesday 21 February will see the Regent Theatre in Palmerston North a glow
with the sounds and colour of Maoridom’s creme de la crème of musicians as the
launch of the first ever Maori Music Awards gets underway. Past and present
Maori composers and musicians will be honored at the Gala event. These include
Sir Howard Morrison, Tommy Taurima, an accomplished composer, Missy Teka, wife
of Tui Teka and husband and wife team Ngapo and Pimia Wehi, well known for their
Kapahaka group Te Waka Huia who are three time national Kapahaka winners.
Spearheaded by Te Matatini, an organisation responsible for developing Maori
Performing Arts nationwide, the Awards celebrate and recognise Maori composers
and the contributions they make to the New Zealand music industry. “Up until now
the Kapahaka composers and singer songwriters have worked and performed in
isolation when their common interest is music. We wanted to change this. The
launch of the Maori Music Awards is a way of recognising music and culture by
celebrating Maori composers,” says Tama Huata, Chairman of Te Matatini.
