Matariki

What is Matariki?

Matariki is a small but distinctive star cluster whose appearance in the north eastern pre-dawn sky in late May, early June marks the start of a new phase of life.

Although there are tribal differences regarding the timing, celebrations most often begin at the next new moon after Matariki has risen. As with similar ‘moveable feasts’ in the western calendar, such as Easter, the exact timing varies from year to year but usually occurs during the month of June.

In ancient times Matariki arrived at the end of the harvest and was therefore a time of plenty for our ancestors. The kumara and other root foods had been gathered. The migration of fish such as moki and korokoro also made Matariki a time of bountiful catches. Visitors were often showered with gifts of specially preserved eel, birds and other delicacies. Matariki was a time to share and present offerings to others.

Matariki can be translated in two ways – Mata Riki (Tiny eyes) and Mata Ariki (Eyes of God). Either way the eyes are thought to watch over the land and its people.

Neil Cruikshank has followed the Gifted and Maori compilation idea and released a compilation CD called "Reo". This is a very strong album and a credit to Neil who has been the only independent Maori music distributor in NZ.

A very successful tour follwed the release of this album and we look forward to more from Neil and Tangata Records.

The reo compilation CD showcases a selection of talented, emerging Māori language contemporary music composers and artists from Aotearoa.

A unique approach to seeking new talent was utilized, with each artist selected for this album in consultation with the 22 strong Māori radio station network and Maori Broadcasting Agency Te Māngai Pāhō. The radio stations sought local talent, with the successful composers/artists chosen from the various submissions.

The reo compilation CD consists of 12 tracks, a stylish mix of contemporary genres - including Rnb, rap and soul. Strong melodies abound and the album appeals to both Māori-speakers and to everyone who enjoys good music.

There is a reason I keep calling the finish line the start line. How fortunate are we to have more than one new beginning? After moving home to New Zealand in October, every day is a new beginning.

I'm happy to say that 5 years since my first ever recording as a solo artist, that we are at the release of my EP, Leaving Paradise. Relief and terror have to hug each other rather a lot at the moment and stability has been courting uncertainty for some time now.

Life is good and there is much to be grateful for.

June 3rd is the official release date and the launch is happening at the wonderful Leigh Sawmill Cafe on the same day. The recording itself is loaded with love and dirt.

There are a lot of people to thank for this recording ever seeing the light of day and without writing a list longer than one cares to read, it is a very humbling thing.

2. Everybody Knows

3. Take a Walk (featuring Emily King)

Highlight of the evening for the nine-member group is a coveted Tui for the Niu FM Best Pacific Music Album for Much Love, Spacifix' debut album.

The band also picks up awards for APRA Best Pacific Song for Gotta Get Like This and Radio 531PI Best Pacific Group.

To acknowledge the band's Tui award win, Spacifix will also be honoured at the New Zealand Music Awards in October.

Multi-instrumentalist and Hip Hop and RnB producer John Chong-Nee grabs two awards – for NZ Music Commission Best Pacific Male Artist and Niu FM Best Pacific Hip Hop Artist for Just Getting By On Love.

Other winners are:
• Aaradhna who picks up the Counties Manukau District Health Board – Smokefree Best Pacific Female Artist for I Love You.
• The Yandall Sisters who gain the Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs Lifetime Achievement Award.
• Vela Manusaute from Killa Kokonut Krew Entertainment who was selected for the Phillip Fuemana Most Promising Artist Award.

Spacifix arrived on the New Zealand music scene in May 2006 with the popular release, "Sunshine Day", which was quickly followed by two more singles, "Gotta Get Like This" and "Make Things Right". The group's debut album "Much Love" was released in October 2006 to great acclaim. They also starred in their own TV show.

Pacific Music Awards chairperson the Rev Mua Strickson Pua says, "The Pacific Music Awards winners affirm the journeys of our artists, our industry, our communities and Aotearoa New Zealand Music for the global market."

NZ Music Awards spokesperson Campbell Smith says RIANZ is proud to support the Pacific Music Awards as the home of the Tui for Best Pacific Music Album.

"The depth and vibrancy of Pacific music in New Zealand is reflected every year in the high standard of entries we receive. This year was no exception, and it's great to see Spacifix pick up the award for Best Pacific Music Album. To have fresh talent coming through can only help grow the Pacific music industry in this country."

The third annual Pacific Music Awards were held at Manukau City's TelstraClear Pacific venue and celebrate Pacific music and artists. Previous finalists and winners include a who's who of Pacific music and some of the most successful artists within the New Zealand music industry.
